Vincent Arthur Bastine

February 27, 1943 — September 12, 2022

Vincent Arthur Bastine (Vince), 79 years old, of Livonia, MI, passed away on Monday, September 12, 2022, from a malignant brain tumor. He was born in Sault Ste. Marie, MI, on February 27, 1943, to Frances Falcone and Clifford Bastine. He graduated from Fordson High School, Dearborn, MI, in 1961, and continued his education at Henry Ford Community College.

In his early years, he joined the Cub Scouts and was very proud to eventually become a Boy Scout. By participating in those groups, he developed an interest in camping, fishing, and studying wild birds. Throughout his life, he could always distinguish between different birds and their bird calls.

Vince joined the Army in April of 1962 and was honorably discharged in April of 1965. His main duties were that of payroll specialist and being the Colonel’s driver and right-hand man. This afforded him the opportunity to come home on leave frequently to visit his high school sweetheart. His time in the service never required him to travel out of the country.

Vince ultimately married his high school sweetheart Patricia Swish on July 2, 1966, and their daughter Tamara was born in December of 1968. Vince and Pat were happily married for 56 years. As a couple, they enjoyed spending time and special occasions with family & friends - playing cards and board games, golfing, going to the movies and out to dinner, traveling, and most especially dancing. Throughout their entire relationship of 62 years, dancing was their happy-time.

Vince worked as a Finance Manager at Chrysler Corporation for 34 years and retired in 2000. He was always one of the first people to show up every day at the office, and he took great pride in his work. He was widely-known as the “go-to” guy - the one who could always solve problems, find a solution, and provide explanations.

Vince was a true sportsman and had a very competitive nature. During his high school years, he played basketball and softball and was on the Herman Gardens Recreation Center Boxing Team. At this same time, his passion for bowling began. Shortly after getting married, he also developed an interest in golfing. His entire adult life consisted of year-round sports - bowling in the winter, softball and golf in the spring and summer, and fishing whenever possible.

After retiring from Chrysler, Vince got actively involved at St. Aidan Catholic Church in Livonia, MI, where he and his family had been members since 1978. He became an usher and joined the Men’s Club, eventually holding the position of president. He volunteered for many church activities and projects - building repairs, grounds-keeping, and annual events such as the Harvest Festival, Children’s Christmas Party, Polish Dinner Dance, Vacation Bible School, and Lenten Fish Dinners. He also participated in the church golf league and softball team.

Vince is survived by his wife Pat, daughter Tamara, several cousins, and many nieces and nephews and their children. He was the last surviving member of his immediate family. He is preceded in death by his sister Diane, mother Frances, step-father Hjalmer, brother Jim, father Clifford, sister Laurie, and brother Paul.
