Raymond Justin Horner, born November 3, 1941, passed away at Providence Hospital in Southfield on September 12, 2023, at the age of 81. He was a proud resident of Livonia for over 34 years. He is survived by his wife of 58 years, Rhoda; son Christopher (Samantha); granddaughters, Elaine and Autumn; siblings Jackie, Barbara, Bob and Dan, and many nieces, nephews, friends and neighbors.
Raymond retired from Detroit Diesel after 34 yeas of work as an Engine Test Operator. He served four years in the US Navy and toured the Mediterranean Sea extensively and loved adventure. His job was turning sea water into drinking water for the crew and ship needs. He was dubbed “The Water King” and received a commendation letter from his captain, which was a special gesture.
He was a man of many talents and renovated two houses, installed new roofs for friends and neighbors, built toyboxes for kids, helped his parents maintain their cottage and lent his expertise to his son with projects. He made his wife’s decorating ideas become reality and he respected nature and nurtured his garden with love and care. Perhaps his greatest attribute was his relationship with his daughter-in-law, Samantha, who considered him the father she never had. He was so revered by his granddaughters that they had a shirt made for him highlighting their respect for his work ethic. The motto: “STAY CALM PAPA WILL FIX IT”.
Raymond will be greatly missed, but not forgotten. He was an example of a true man who knew himself, respected life, and others. Our world was enhanced by his presence in it and his spirit will live on through all those who knew him.
Visitation for Raymond will be held Monday, September 25th from 4:00 – 8:00PM with a Memorial Service at 6:00PM at Manns Family Funeral Home, 17000 Middlebelt (south of Six Mile), Livonia 48154
