James (Jim) J. Kubus, age 74, passed away on Monday, December 11, 2023 in Howell, Mich. He was born May 7, 1949 in Detroit, Mich. Son of Eleanor and Joseph Kubus. He is survived by his sons, James II and Stefan; daughter-in-law Andrea; grandchildren Cameron, Ava and Benjamin; and sisters Diane and Mary.
Jim earned a bachelor’s degree in engineering from the University of Michigan before earning his master’s degree in botany/plant biology from the University of Hawaii. He married Vicki Pope in 1974 and lived in Hawaii from 1974-75 working as a marine biologist. Once Vicki was diagnosed with multiple sclerosis, the two moved to Ohio briefly before making a permanent home back in Michigan where Jim transitioned to working as a senior data analyst for the University of Michigan. But most importantly, he began a path as a full-time caretaker for his wife and eventually his children. Jim lived his life dedicated to his family’s well-being and serving the Lord. He was an avid hockey fan who loved watching games on TV, coaching his sons and playing with them in the house or outside.
Family, friends and others whose lives Jim touched are invited to the viewing (9:30 a.m.) and mass (10:30 a.m.) at St. Genevieve-St. Maurice Catholic Church (29015 Jamison St., Livonia, Mich.) on Wednesday, December 13, 2023 to celebrate his new life with Christ.
