Evelyn Charlotte Treher Gillis

December 31, 1969 — May 12, 2015

Born in Monroeville, Pennsylvania on April 17, 1911, died May 12, 2015 in Beaufort Memorial Hospital, Beaufort,  SC. at the age of 104.

Married for 61 years to the late Rev. Dr. Paul McBride Gillis, she moved to Detroit, Michigan when her husband accepted a call to a pastorate there. They were married on June 28, 1937 in Pittsburgh, PA and were the parents of one daughter, Rebecca Ann Gillis Hand Sooy. Both preceded her in death, her husband on September 8, 1998 and her daughter, October 16, 2005.

Evelyn was the daughter of William Henry Treher, who died when she was 12, and Minnie Wissman Treher, who died when she was eight. She and her sisters, Olivia and Jane, were raised by their aunt and uncle, Olivia Treher  and James Larimer Carlisle.

A graduate of Indiana State Teachers College, Indiana, PA, she taught school in Monroeville, a suburb of Pittsburgh. Monroeville was founded by her grandfather, Joel Monroe, its first postmaster. In Pittsburgh she was a member of the Order of Eastern Star and the Daughters of the American Revolution. She was also the granddaughter of Aaron Treher a union Army officer during the civil war and was a descendent of  John Macal Duff, an officer in the Revolutionary War.

In Detroit Evelyn served as a ruling elder in the Westminster Presbyterian Church and was an active member of Kenjockerty.

At the age of 99, she moved to The Summit Place, Beaufort, SC to be closer to her family. She loved attending both Sea Island Presbyterian Church and performances of the Beaufort Symphony Orchestra. She also loved to shop.

She leaves behind a son-in-law, W Stephen Sooy (wife Phyllis)of Beaufort; three grandchildren, Todd Monroe Hand (wife Marian) of Albuquerque, NM;  Dr Sharon Keverline (husband, Dr Michael Keverline) of Chesapeake, VA; Darren Shockey Hand of Los Angeles, CA, and a step grandson, Jeffrey W Sooy (wife Melinda) of Eagan, MN. She also leaves five great-grandchildren, Kelsey Jean, Aidan -great-Michael and Ryan Lyn Keverline and Jacob Richard and Thea Rachel Hand and four step-great-grandchildren, Nicholas, Laura, Alex and Dana Grieme.

The Rev. Mary Austin, pastor of the Westminster Presbyterian Church, will preside over a graveside service at 1 p.m., June 5, 2015 at White Chapel Cemetery, Troy, Michigan.

A memorial service will be held in Beaufort at The Summit Place at a time to be determined.

The family suggests memorial contributions be made to The Westminster Presbyterian Church, 17567 Hubbel Avenue, Detroit, MI 48235.
