Ernest L. Leiner, a resident of Westland, passed to eternal life on December 21, 2022, at the age of 92.
Ernie was born August 16, 1930, in Rodalben, Germany, to the late August and Regina Leiner. He married the love of his life, Irmhilde (Schmitt) on February 15, 1958 and celebrated 62 years of marriage before she passed in August of 2020.
He came to the US from Germany after enduring the hardships of the war, served in the US Army, married his sweetheart, worked at Hygrade Foods for nearly 40 years, raised his three daughters then enjoyed his retirement years. He enjoyed his model trains, his coin and stamp collections, was an avid Red Wing fan and animal lover. He loved listening to German music and taking Sunday car rides with Mama to no set destination.
He loved and was loved by his children, Sylvia (Joseph) Belanger, Linda (Jerry) Cwiek, Carmen (the late Dennis) Cliver and his grandchildren, Joseph (Liz) Belanger, the late Jason Belanger, Michael (Heather) Murray, Brian (Melanie) Cwiek, Jenifer (Jeremy) Zaluski, Thomas (Molly) Cwiek, Gregory (Taylor) Koba and Darren (Taylor) Koba, his many great grandchildren and his nieces and nephews.
He is also survived by his brother Walter (Gertrude) Leiner who still resides in Germany.
Visitation will be held at Manns Family Funeral Home on Wednesday, December 28, 2022 from 2:00 – 7:00pm with a Rosary recited at 6:00pm.
The Funeral Mass will be held at St. Genevieve – St. Maurice Catholic Church on Thursday, December 29, 2022 at 11:00am. He will be in lying in-state at 10:00am.
Burial will be at Great Lakes National Cemetery, Holly MI
