Elizabeth “Beth” Leland Downs, 78, of Novi, Michigan, passed away peacefully on May 11, 2026.

Beth was born in Michigan to Nancy Downs and Edward Downs. She pursued a lifelong passion for education and faith, ultimately earning both a Ph.D. in Education and a Master of Divinity. Those who knew her affectionately referred to her as “Reverend Dr. Mom.”

Beth dedicated more than 30 years of her life to teaching English, where she inspired generations of students through her love of literature, learning, and thoughtful conversation. Following her retirement from teaching, she continued her calling through years of ministry as an ordained Presbyterian minister.

She was married to her husband, John, for 11 years.

Beth is survived by her children, Rebecca, Nancy, and Nicholas; her eight grandchildren; along with many extended family members and friends who will deeply miss her wisdom, compassion, humor, and presence.

She was preceded in death by her late husband, James “Jim” Kerr.

Beth will be remembered for her persistent sense of irreverent humor, even through difficult or deeply worshipful moments. She accepted people for who they were, demonstrated compassion through action and self-awareness, and believed that love was something practiced daily. She insisted on levity as part of a faithful life and somehow managed to provide exactly what was needed for those around her, despite the many constraints of her time.

Funeral services will be held on Saturday, May 23rd at 11:00 AM at Westminster Church of Detroit, 17567 Hubbell Ave., Detroit, MI 48235. Fellowship immediately following the service.
