Obituary

Eleanor Elizabeth Smith, age 93, of Livonia, Michigan, passed away on March 13, 2026.

Eleanor was born in Albany, Louisiana, on June 8, 1932, to Lawrence and Elizabeth Shaffer. She graduated from Hazel Park High School in 1950.

Eleanor was married to Alan Smith on May 23, 1953; they were married 58 years.

Eleanor loved being a wife, mother and homemaker. She also loved to sing and dance, being a long-time member of the Livonia Civic Chorus. She was an avid bowler and swimmer, as well as a skilled cook, baker (including her award-winning banana nut bread), and seamstress. She loved to travel, including camping trips as a family, and several trips abroad as a retired couple with Alan. She also enjoyed playing board games, including many sessions of Scrabble, Ticket to Ride and Yahtzee. She also loved her pet dogs.

Eleanor is survived by her children, Diane Gonzalez and Matthew Smith (Denise); Grandchildren, Rebecca Bogin (Daniel), Justin Boomgaard, Tracie Gonzalez, Justin Gonzalez; sister-in-law Rita Shaffer, and many nieces and nephews, other family and friends.

Eleanor is preceded in death by her husband Alan; siblings, Elmer Shaffer and Ruth Krajewski (Bob); son, Timothy Smith and son-in-law, Angel Gonzalez.

The Visitation will be held on Thursday, March 19 from 3:00 - 8:00 PM at Manns Family Funeral Home, with a Rosary at or around 6:30 PM. The funeral service will be held on Friday, March 20 at St. Priscilla Catholic Church (9:30 AM in state, 10:00 AM mass).
